Australia marked a powerful start in the Super 8s of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with a commanding victory over Bangladesh, winning by 28 runs via the DLS method in their first encounter of the second stage.

Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends. The star of the show was Pat Cummins, whose hattrick in a sensational spell decimated Bangladesh's batting order. Complementing Cummins' heroics was Adam Zampa, whose disciplined bowling further tightened the screws on Bangladesh, restricting them to a modest total of 140/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Najmul Hossain Shanto (41) and Towhid Hridoy (40) were the only notable contributors with the bat for Bangladesh.

Australia’s chase got off to a brisk start with openers Travis Head and David Warner setting the foundation. Head scored a quick 31 off 21 balls, while Warner remained unbeaten with a fluent 53 off 35 balls. The opening duo added 65 runs for the first wicket, putting Australia in a commanding position.

Rain briefly interrupted the proceedings, but upon resumption, Bangladesh struck back by claiming the wickets of Head and Mitchell Marsh, both falling to the spin of Rishad Hossain. Glenn Maxwell came in at number four and showcased his aggressive intent, scoring 14 off just 6 balls before rain intervened once more. This time, the downpour was heavier and lasted longer, ultimately leading to the application of the DLS method. With Australia well ahead of the par score, the match was awarded to them by 28 runs.

Besides Rishad's impressive figures of 2/23, Mahedi Hasan stood out with an economical spell, conceding just 22 runs in his 4 overs. However, their efforts were not enough to thwart Australia’s determined chase.

Australia will next face Afghanistan on Sunday, aiming to build on this momentum. Meanwhile, Bangladesh is set to take on India on Saturday, hoping to bounce back from this defeat.
