Bridgetown, Barbados - Team India kicked off their Super 8s campaign at the Cricket World Cup 2024 with a convincing 47-run victory over Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval on Friday.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India faced early tremors as their top-order stumbled. Suryakumar Yadav emerged as the lone warrior, smashing a blistering 53 off just 28 balls to rescue India from a precarious position. The middle order failed to capitalize, with Rashid Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi claiming three wickets apiece to restrict India to 181/8.

Afghanistan's chase began on a disastrous note as Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in his opening spell, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai cheaply. Axar Patel joined the party early, removing Ibrahim Zadran in the first over. The early dismissals put Afghanistan on the back foot, and despite a valiant 44-run partnership between Azmatullah Omarzai (26) and Gulbadin Naib (17), they never truly recovered.

Bumrah continued his stellar performance, finishing with figures of 3/7 in his four overs, including a maiden over. Arshdeep Singh provided excellent support, claiming 3/36 to dismantle the Afghan batting line-up. Axar Patel (1/15), Kuldeep Yadav (2/32), and Ravindra Jadeja (1/20) chipped in with crucial wickets, ensuring a comfortable victory for India.

India's bowling attack, spearheaded by the lethal pace duo of Bumrah and Arshdeep, proved too strong for Afghanistan. Their disciplined bowling display coupled with Suryakumar Yadav's knock set the platform for a dominant win, putting India in a strong position as they begin their Super 8s campaign.
